I’m a Christian. Now what?

Tldr; study the Bible, pray, and go to church.

Many Christians do not know where to go once they give their life to Jesus—or even the point of it.

Whether you are a new Christian, a Christian who never got on the right track, or find your current situation lacking (even not as a Christian), it can be challenging to understand what to do. Everyone has their personal advice, “Stick it out!” “Just show up,” “Go to next steps,” “Join a small group,” “Just love Jesus,” and many more worldly ideas that are not necessarily wrong but not always helpful, especially when the hype runs out, and all that is left is the meaninglessness of everything again.

Someone somewhere forgot to mention that concerts and Ted Talks are not the points of Christianity. Jesus is.

The whole point of life is can be summed up by the Westminster Shorter Catechism Question and Answer #1: Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever (Ps. 86:9; 16:5-11; 144:15; Isa. 12:2; 60:21; Luke 2:10; Rom. 11:36; 1 Cor. 6:20; 10:31; Phil. 4:4; Rev. 4:11; 21:3-4).

Great. So what does that mean?

Glorifying God in the most basic sense means loving him with everything you got and loving your neighbor (Matt. 22:36ff). And, to enjoy God means to feel love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Of course, it is much more in-depth than that, but this is the basic idea).

Now we are getting somewhere. So, as Christians, we must love God and our neighbor.

There are three main ways to love God: study the Bible, pray, and attend church.

  • Studying the Bible allows us to know God better, thus, knowing how to love him properly.
  • Praying shows that we trust God to provide.
  • Attending church, at the foundation, is God’s command. Furthermore, it is essential to surround ourselves with like-minded people while worshipping God—and it should be edifying.

If we devote ourselves to these three foundational paths, we will grow as Christians and enjoy God.
